BHEL secures order for 800kV, 6000 MW Khavda-Nagpur LCC HVDC Terminal Stations along with AC Transmission systems at Khavda and Nagpur
New Delhi, November 27: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), in partnership with Hitachi Energy India Limited, has secured a landmark order through competitive bidding from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) on behalf of its Project SPV Company for setting up a + 800kV, 6000 MW HVDC Link between the Khavda KPS2 (Gujarat) and Nagpur (Maharashtra).
BHEL is proud to be associated with building this prestigious project of national importance linked with the Transmission System for Evacuation of Power from the potential Renewable Energy Zone in Khavda area of Gujarat. The HVDC link, expected to be established by 2029, will significantly contribute towards the national mission to achieve 500 GW of power from Renewable Energy by the year 2030. This project demonstrates BHEL’s sustained commitment to the “Make in India” initiative of Govt. of India.
For this project, among other equipment and systems, BHEL will supply Converter Transformers, Shunt Reactors, Filter Bank Capacitors, MV Switchgear and Instrument Transformers from its Bhopal Plant, and Thyristor Valves from its Electronics Division plant at Bengaluru. These valves will be used to convert AC Power at Khavda into DC power for transmitting it over a HVDC transmission line of over 1200 km and then converting it back into AC at the Nagpur end to evacuate 6GW of power. Besides these, the Transmission Business Group of BHEL shall design, supply and install the mega size 765/400 kV power evacuation system at the Nagpur terminal of the project.
Notably, BHEL has been associated with major HVDC projects in India since the inception of state-of-the-art technology solutions in the Indian grid. BHEL has been involved in successful execution of several national HVDC links in the past, like Rihand-Dadri, Chandrapur-Padghe, Ballia-Bhiwadi, North East -Agra and Raigarh-Pugalur HVDC links, and has established manufacturing facilities for HVDC products up to 800kV.
BHEL, an undisputed leader in the Power Generation and Transmission segments in India, undertakes turnkey projects from concept to commissioning for EHV Substations, Switchyard, HVDC Converter Stations and FACTS solutions backed by Power System Studies.
